Access to Collections

 

General Collection
The general collection of library materials (books, sound recordings, exhibition catalogs, current periodicals, reference materials) is located on open access shelving and available for use all the hours the Library is open. Other collections, requiring special care and handling, are described below.

 

 

Archives
Materials from the Institute Archives must be retrieved for users by library staff. Please fill out a Archives Request Form at the Circulation and Information Desk. Allow at least two business days for the materials to be retrieved.

Artists' Book Collection
Items in the Artists' Book collection can be found searching the library online catalog. Please search the catalog, write down the call number, and present the call number to staff at the Circulation and Information Desk who will then retrieve the materials. Artists' books must be used in the Library, under supervision of Circulation staff.

Film, Video, DVD, and Moving Image Collection
The moving image collections are located in the Film Services Library. Most materials, except for films, are available for in-house viewing. Some limited circulation of items is available to faculty. Alumni and non-CalArts users have access to view our collections for study and research, with the exception of film. Media equipment carts are available for classroom use or reviews by faculty, staff and students. Carts can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance in Film Services.

Images

Digital images and slides are managed through Image Services, located within the Library.

Natural History Collection
The Natural History Collection is located in glass cabinets and drawers opposite the sound recordings. It holds specimens of animals and plants, extant and extinct, as well as minerals and various representations of them. The collection is open to all for use in the library. The top of the chest of drawers is an extendable work surface, with a built in grid for scale.

Performance Scores
Performance scores must be retrieved for users by library staff. All performance scores are fully cataloged in the online catalog. Please search the catalog, write down the call number, and present the number to staff at the Circulation Desk who will then retrieve the score.

Periodicals
Current periodicals are on shelves open to the public. Back issues of periodicals are accessible by library staff only. These can be requested at any time the library is open either at the Periodicals Office or at the Circulation and Information Desk. Periodicals may only be used in the Library for two hours at a time.

Reserve Items
Faculty may place library and personal materials on reserve at the Circulation and Information Desk for use by their students. Moving image collection items may be placed on reserve in Film Services and can be viewed only at that location.

 

 
Special Collections
The CalArts Library maintains a small collection of special, rare and fragile items. All materials in Special Collections are cataloged and may be found searching the online catalog. Please search the catalog, write down the call number, and present the call number to staff at the Circulation and Information Desk who will then retrieve the materials. Special Collections materials are available Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and must be used in the Library, under supervision of Circulation staff.
