How to use the library

The CalArts Library is located on the 2nd floor of the main building and is open during regularly scheduled hours.

All members of the CalArts Community, i.e. students, faculty, staff, and alumni, use their CalArts ID Cards as library cards.

Books circulate to students, staff, alumni, and SCILNET patrons for 21 days and to faculty for 120 days. Books may be renewed if they are not on hold for someone else. There are no fines for overdue books, however, if materials are not returned, students cannot register for the next semester or graduate. There are charges for lost or damaged materials.

Students may check out books from the regular collection.

Faculty members may check out books, records, or CD's from the regular collection.

Generally, Periodicals and Reference books do NOT circulate. However, in special instances with permission from a Librarian, the Circulation Supervisor, or the Periodicals Supervisor, items may be checked out and must be returned within 2 hours to the library.

Faculty and Library Reserve materials may be checked out by all patrons. Most reserve materials have a circulation period of 2 hours and must be used in the library.

Special Collection books do not circulate and must be read in the circulation area.

Please remember that IF YOU CANNOT FIND THE ITEM you are looking for on the shelf, we need to know it. Place a Borrower Request either on the web catalog or at the Circulation Desk. You will be notified when the item is found or returned. If the book cannot be found it can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan if you wish.

Video equipment may be checked out at the Film Services area for classroom use. Video materials are to be viewed in the library except when they are taken for classroom use.

CDs, LPs and headphones are kept in the Library's listening area. Cassettes and faculty and library reserve sound materials are kept behind the Circulation Desk. They are for listening to in the library and are not checked out except with special permission from a Librarian or the Circulation Supervisor.
