Instruction
The Library offers instruction to CalArts students, faculty, and staff on a variety of information resources available through the Library.
- One-on-one instruction is available by meeting with a Reference Librarian.
- CS114 is a 2-credit course, offered by the School of Critical Studies and taught by Instruction Librarian Coco Halverson, which covers library and Internet research for visual and performing artists. It is intended for first-year students but is open to all. The course web site is available at http://muse.calarts.edu/~infolit/
- A very important part of the Library’s instruction program is “course-integrated” instruction. This takes place when the faculty member and Librarian meet to design a class session or sessions which integrate library resources with the goals of the class. The most relevant resources are chosen to present to students in the class, often in the Library’s Computer Lab, and are usually linked to a specific project or assignment for the course. Examples of resources which may be presented include periodicals research, image and picture research, databases for literary criticism and author biographies, music encyclopedias and sound recordings, and the mechanics of ftp necessary for uploading a web site. To learn more, including how library resources can supplement your teaching, contact Coco Halverson, coco@calarts.edu or 291-3024.
